Does ADT Require a Contract and How Long Is It
This is probably the first question people ask me. And honestly it makes sense, nobody wants to lock themselves into something without knowing what they are getting into first. So let me just tell you straight.
Yes, ADT requires a monitoring agreement. The standard term is 36 months. Three years. I know that sounds like a lot when you first hear it, so let me give you some context on why it actually makes more sense than it sounds.
Why the Contract Exists
The reason ADT can offer free installation and free equipment is because of that monitoring agreement. They are essentially giving you thousands of dollars worth of equipment and professional installation at no upfront cost. The monitoring agreement is how they recover that investment over time. When you think about it that way it is a pretty reasonable trade.
I have had customers tell me they were turned off by the contract at first but once they did the math they realized the value was genuinely there. Free installation alone is worth $199. The equipment we are talking about is worth significantly more than that. So you are essentially getting all of that for free in exchange for a 36 month monitoring commitment.
What Happens After 36 Months
Once your initial term ends your agreement moves to month to month. At that point you have more flexibility. You can stay, you can cancel, you can upgrade your system. Most people stay because by that point the system is part of their daily life and they do not want to give up the protection.
Most of my people never really think about the contract after the first few months because they are too busy actually using and enjoying the system. The app, the monitoring, the smart home features. It becomes normal fast.
What About Early Termination
If you cancel before your 36 months are up there is an early termination fee. The exact amount depends on how much time is left on your agreement. This is something I always want people to know upfront before they sign anything. I would rather you go in with full information than feel surprised later.
My honest advice is this. If you are not sure you want to stay in your current home for at least a couple years, let us talk about that before you sign. There are also options for transferring your service to a new address if you move, which most people do not know about. ADT allows service transfers so your system can move with you.
Is It Worth It
I think so. And I am not just saying that because I sell ADT. I say it because 36 months of professional monitoring, a fully installed smart home security system, a lifetime warranty on all your equipment, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing someone is watching your home 24 hours a day is genuinely worth it for most homeowners.
Package theft alone is a real problem around here. I hear about it constantly from people in Doylestown, Warminster, Warrington, Newtown. A video doorbell and professional monitoring changes that equation completely. Thieves have become aware enough to start looking for cameras and they are a deterent to all but the most dedicated criminals.
