How To Protect Your Packages From Theft
Package theft is a HUGE problem all over Bucks County. Honestly I dont understand it because there are several very eay things you can do to prevent it at your home. Someone orders something online, it shows up on their porch, and by the time they get home it is gone. Sometimes it is a twenty dollar item, sometimes it is something they waited weeks for. Either way it is infuriating and it is happening more than ever.
Package theft is not a random rare event anymore. It is organized, it is widespread, and the people doing it have gotten better at it. They follow delivery trucks. They are fast and they know what they are doing.
The good news is there is a lot you can do about it.
A Video Doorbell Changes Everything
This is the single most effective thing you can do. A visible camera at your front door changes the risk calculation for anyone thinking about walking up your path and taking something. Most porch pirates are opportunistic. They are looking for easy targets with no cameras. When they see one they usually keep moving.
And when they do not keep moving you have footage. Clear footage of their face, their car, their license plate. That footage has led to arrests in all over Bucks County. It has been shared on Nextdoor and Facebook groups and led to neighbors identifying suspects. It matters.
A video doorbell camera is one of the options included as a free equipment choice with every ADT system I set up. It is one of the most popular choices and honestly I completely understand why and recomend everyone choose it as part of their free system.
Tell Them Where to Leave It
Most delivery carriers let you leave instructions on your account. FedEx, UPS, Amazon, they all have it. Tell them to leave packages at a side door, behind a gate, on a back porch, anywhere that is not visible from the street. Personally, Im a big fan of having a perminent box just for packages. Out of site equals out of criminal minds. Once you have it it takes five minutes to set up and it works.
If you have a garage you can often have packages left inside. Amazon has a program specifically for this. It sounds a little invasive at first but once you realize it means your packages are never sitting on your front step unattended it starts to seem a lot more reasonable.
A Package Lockbox Is Worth It
These are heavy steel boxes that bolt to your porch or attach to a fixed point near your door and are the best choice in my opinion after having a clearly visable camera like a door bell camera. The delivery driver puts the package in, the door locks behind it, and only you can open it. They run anywhere from fifty to a couple hundred dollars depending on the size and quality and if you or a friend is handy you can build one yourself with instructions found online.
Not glamorous but genuinely effective. If someone walks up and tries to grab a package and finds a heavy steel box bolted to your porch they are not getting it. They move on.
Require a Signature for High Value Items
For anything expensive, require signature confirmation at the time of order if the option is available. Yes it means you have to be home or schedule a redelivery. But it also means nobody can walk off with a four hundred dollar piece of electronics you left sitting on your porch all afternoon.
Most people skip this option to avoid the hassle. Then they skip it right up until the day something valuable goes missing.
Get to Know Your Neighbors
I know this sounds old fashioned but it genuinely works. Neighbors who look out for each other notice when something does not look right. A car slowly cruising a street multiple times. Someone walking up to a porch when nobody is home. People who know each other notice these things and say something.
Nextdoor is huge in Bucks County for exactly this reason. People share footage, warn each other about suspicious activity, post license plates. It is not a perfect system but it adds a layer of community awareness that actually deters people who are casing neighborhoods.
The Combination That Actually Works
Honestly the most protected homes are the ones that combine several of these things. A visible camera, a package lockbox, delivery instructions that keep packages out of sight, and a neighborhood where people are paying attention. No single thing is a guarantee. Together they make your home a significantly harder target than the house next door with no camera and packages piling up on the front step.
